Dancing and Events in Lockhart River

During the 1970s, a significant revival of Lockhart River’s cultural life occurred. The conduct of traditional activities increased and participation in cultural dance festivals was encouraged. In 1977, a dance and culture festival was created with the goal of bringing together communities from across Cape York to celebrate and showcase the culture of the region. This festival was to be rotated through communities within the Cape every two years, however, for the last 25 years, it has been held in Laura and has become nationally and internationally known as the Laura Aboriginal Dance Festival. Now considered to be the longest running Aboriginal cultural festival in Australia, many in Lockhart River would like to see the festival returned to its true place of origin.

There are many events of celebration held each year in Lockhart River. Annual NAIDOC Week events and St James Day celebrations are highlights for the community.
